CWU Wind Ensemble Concert "Baekdudaegan"

May 30, 2024

The Central Washington University Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. T. André Feagin (director of bands) presents its final concert of the academic year on May 30, 2024, at 7:00 pm in Hertz Concert Hall. The program titled, “Baekdudaegan” features the ensemble in a preview performance before their upcoming presentation at the 20th World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) international conference in Gwangju-Gyeonggi, South Korea. The repertoire presented at this concert seeks to display the ensembles’ identity, cultural inheritance, artistic taste, and community as we share and celebrate our story with the world! Centered on the program is the world premiere of a work commissioned by Dr. T. André Feagin and the CWU Wind Ensemble by CWU composition professor Dr. Jiyoun Chung and features CWU piano professor Dr. Yerin Kim. The work titled, “Baekdudaegan” is named after a mountain range that runs through almost the length of the Korean Peninsula. Culturally, it has been considered the spiritual backbone of all Korean people. Toward the end of World War II, the mountain range was divided into halves by the 38 Military Demarcation Line as an army boundary between the United States and the Soviet Union, a boundary that remains today. In this three-movement concerto for piano and wind ensemble, the composer seeks to address this issue of the Korean Peninsula and the painful cry of the mountain and people, a cry heard for nearly 80 years. The program will also feature composers Paul Creston, Jonathan Newman, Frank Ticheli, Carlos Simon and David Maslanka. We hope you can join us for this incredible evening of music as we share OUR STORY. The concert is free, open to the general public and will include a pre-concert talk with the composer and conductor.
