Celebrate National “Take a Hike Day” in Central Washington!

November 17, 2023

Each year on November 17, we celebrate National Take a Hike Day, the perfect day to escape to Central Washington and explore our natural lands. Whether it be your favorite trail or a brand-new one, we encourage you to plan a weekend getaway full of hikes and other Central Washington adventures! Central Washington is filled with a plethora of amazing hiking trails that will make National Take a Hike Day great, so let’s take a look at a few of your options.

Manastash Ridge is a more difficult hike, but a regular endeavor among locals and tourists. You’ll experience some elevation gain throughout your hike, with open exposure, making it quite a workout so be prepared! In the spring and summer, you’ll also be able to see a ton of wildflowers on your hike, and in any season, an impressive landscape of Ellensburg’s farmland below and a clear image of Mt. Stuart. When you reach the summit, be sure to sign the stationary notebook and log yourself as a hiker that day!

Swauk Forest Discovery Trail near Blewett Pass is a well-trafficked summer trail, yet is still great year-round. You can learn about the beautiful woodland ecosystems here as there are 25 different interpretive stops along the trail. You get great forest and meadow views along the way when you hike along this trail. There are a few benches throughout that gives you an opportunity to take a break and really take in the beauty around you!

Teanaway Ridge Trail is moderately trafficked and moderately rated for difficulty. Teanaway Ridge is used for not only hiking, but also horseback riding. The greatest part about this trail is the views! Much of the trek is exposed along a ridge, which allows you to gaze out and admire the layers of elevation around you. Once at the top, take a moment to sit in awe of the 360 views of the Stuart Range, the Cascades and a stunning Mt. Rainier.

Before any hike, make sure you are prepared and ready for what is ahead of you! Making sure you know what to do on the trail, how to dress, what to bring with you, etc. are very important.
