Creative Day Trips in Cle Elum & Roslyn

Venture into these rustic Washington destinations for an exploration of rich historical landmarks, unique dining and shopping opportunities, and a peek at the creativity that flows from local artists. Nestled in the heart of the Cascades, the neighboring communities of Cle Elum and Roslyn, Washington invite you in for a lesson in history and culture!

If you have 1 day...

Begin your day in Roslyn with an early morning stroll through the historic Roslyn Cemetery. These burial grounds consist of twenty-six separate, but adjacent cemeteries representing the rich ethnic mix that settled in Roslyn several centuries ago. Next, visit Roslyn's downtown core, which is primarily located on Pennsylvania Avenue. Here you will enjoy diverse dining and shopping opportunities, including The Brick Saloon, a tavern built in the late 1800s which boasts the title of the oldest continuously operating tavern in Washington State.

After a light lunch, head over to Cle Elum by foot or on bike via Coal Mines Trail, an interpretive trail offering travelers a glimpse of the old mining activity that was once abundant in the area. Once you've arrived in Cle Elum, make your way to the Carpenter House Museum for a tour of this historic mansion, offering a look into the lifestyle of the 20th century Cle Elum elite. Bring the day to a close with a taste of Cle Elum's culinary scene during a delectable dinner at one of the many nearby restaurants!

If you have 2 days...

An additional day of adventure offers more time to enjoy Cle Elum! Step into Cle Elum Bakery to begin your second morning in town with the delightful scent of fresh French bread and an array of doughnuts sure to make your mouth water. This bakery has been serving up sweet and savory treats since 1906, so their tried and true recipes are guaranteed to please.

Once you've satisfied your sweet tooth, make your way to the Cle Elum Telephone Museum, the oldest complete telephone museum west of the Mississippi carrying technology that ranges from 1876-1970. Enjoy a break for lunch, then visit Pacific Crest Creatives to get in touch with your artistic side! This carefully curated art gallery displays the works of local artists and even offers art classes that feature a variety of techniques and mediums, so check the class schedule prior to your visit to see if you can join in on the fun!

If you have 3 days

If you extend your visit, begin your third day at Suncadia Resort, a premier Pacific Northwest destination. Located on the property is the 1,000 Steps staircase, which leads visitors over 21 flights from the Lodge to the rushing Cle Elum River below. Enjoy a stroll along the river, then venture back up to the resort for a wine tasting at Swiftwater Cellars. Sip premium wines made by internationally acclaimed winemakers and unwind while enjoying the breathtaking mountain outlooks from the property.

Next, make your way to South Cle Elum to explore the historic Rail Yard, established in 1909 as a pivotal stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. Follow the Interpretive Rail Yard Trail through significant locations of interest, then enjoy a meal at Smokey's Bar-B-Que, an award-winning BBQ joint which operates in the old depot!
